The feasibility of converting sludge from recycle and virgin fiber mills to fuel
ethanol was evaluated. Sludge samples were 1) analyzed to quantify key constituents
and 2) tested to establish their potential to generate ethanol. A conceptual design
for an ethanol plant was prepared and its capital cost and operating and maintenance
expenses were estimated. Although not now economically attractive, the anticipated
lower cost of the enzyme used to convert cellulose to ethanol may make the process
appealing in two years.
